Negative self-image and low self-esteem

What is a negative self-image?

People with a negative self-image reject themselves in one or more areas. Disapproval of yourself often leads to the idea that others will also disapprove of you. You think negatively about yourself and you interpret behaviour or statements of others in a negative way (for example, 'see, I can't do it', 'I'm not good enough', 'nobody likes me/nobody thinks I'm smart/special'). The result may be that you do not stand up for yourself, that you avoid certain (social or performance-oriented) situations (e.g. social fear, fear of failure), or that you numb yourself to shut down your feelings when you think you are being disapproved of (i.e. through alcohol, drugs, overeating etc.).  This can lead to gloom or anxiety problems.

Treatment

At Grip Psychologen we work with competitive memory training (COMET) in addition to cognitive behavioural therapy. Both methods offer the opportunity to strengthen your self-image and teach you how to deal with negative thoughts about yourself.

Reimbursement

Treatment for negative self-image is not covered by health insurance. Unless you are diagnosed with another DSM-5 disorder, you will have to pay for the costs yourself. Ask our office management about the conditions.
